TRAIN WITH INTENT. MEASURE WHAT MATTERS.

At Riley Sports Performance, we use velocity-based training to guide effort, monitor output, and ensure every rep has purpose.

WHAT IS VELOCITY-BASED TRAINING?

Velocity-based training measures how fast an athlete moves a given load. Instead of relying solely on weight, we use real-time velocity feedback to better understand effort, intent, and training quality.

This approach allows our coaches to make informed decisions while helping athletes learn how quality movement should feel — not just how much weight is on the bar.

WHY VELOCITY MATTERS AT RSP

  • Objective feedback that removes guesswork from training

  • Encourages intent and focus on every repetition

  • Helps manage fatigue and readiness

  • Allows progress to be tracked over time

HOW ATHLETES USE OUTPUT IN TRAINING

1. Athletes perform prescribed movements during training
2. Output measures movement velocity in real time
3. Coaches use feedback to guide load, intent, or adjustments
4. Athletes learn what high-quality reps feel like
Velocity is a tool — not the goal. We prioritize movement quality, effort, and consistency over chasing numbers.

UNDERSTANDING VELOCITY ZONES

ZONE 1

High Velocity / Speed Work

Focuses on intent, explosiveness, and moving efficiently

ZONE 2

Moderate Velocity / Power Development

Builds the ability to produce force quickly

ZONE 3

Lower Velocity / Strength Work
Emphasizes control, force production, and technical consistency

ZONE 4

Recovery & Technical Work
Supports movement quality and reinforces proper patterns

ATHLETES ARE COACHED ON HOW EACH ZONE SHOULD FEEL, NOT JUST WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY.

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM OUR ATHLETES

  • Train with intent on every rep

  • Focus on quality before increasing load

  • Understand the purpose of each session

  • Ask questions and stay engaged in the process

Velocity-based training works best when athletes take ownership of their effort and execution.
